Having been to France recently I can tell you that at current exchange rates there is very little that is cheaper than in the UK. Wine and beer, some cheese and locally grown veg is still cheaper but not massively so. If you do head for the shops it should be for the things that you cannot buy here: tubs of rillettes springs to mind. I love that stuff.
If you're quick may get a glimpse of the latest wood-slick on the beaches of Kent (pictured below). I fear if we don't support the ferry companies, sooner or later the only way off this island will be on a home-made raft.
